Portrait Paintings and Drawings
“Self Portrait” 2004
Pastel on Black Paper 20inX30in
Done to work as a LOGO for my business card. I'm told I smile more than this.
“Kirsten” 1982
Pencil on card 20inX30in
This is an old unfinished drawing when my niece was about four years old. She is now a practising nurse with three boys.
“Bruce” 2006
Oil on Panel 12inX13in
Between 2003 and 2008, I did a lot of figure studies at the Winnipeg Art
Gallery's "Open Studio" program. This torso of Bruce was done from life in
two 3 hour sessions spaced a week apart.
I had lightened his hair for a bit more contrast with the background,
he said he hoped that this is what he would look like in his 60's.
Bruce was an extraordinary model. While his
usual style was to use props, putting himself in extreme poses to the point
of self-injury, this pose was just standing...without moving...for 3 hours.
Twice.
We made him take breaks... he insisted he didn't need them.
“Bea” 2007
Pastel on Paper 30inX20in
A portrait commission. An experiment in doing a cross between something modern (classical rules say that heads should be no bigger than 75% lifesize) and a very smooth pastel - almost like 30's movie posters.
“Portrait of a Young Man” 2006
Pencil on Paper 11inX12in
On one of our sketch nights, the model didn't show up so we did portraits of each other. This drawing actually looks better than this and needs to be re-scanned.
