Black and White Oil Paintings
“A Marylis” 2007
Oil on Panel 24inX24in
This deserves to be painted again, in colour this time. The foliage would have some beautiful luminescent greens with dark, purple blossoms and a pale tan/yellow background.
“Flurry” 2007
This painting was about the irony of painting this beautiful summer blossom in the middle of a blizzard in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.
It was published in the March/April issue of International Artist Magazine. placing fourth in a competition with a field of thousands of paintings.
“A Sucker for Gradience” 2007
Oil on Panel 24inX24in
As the title implies, this painting is about the luscious tones possible with black and white oil painting. As luscious as the flowers themselves...
but longer lasting
“Curtain Call” 2008
Oil on Panel 24inX24in
The extreme beauty of late summer. The overripe peonies, partly blown apart by wind and rain take their final bow.
“Glad?” 2008
Oil on Panel 24inX24in
The twist of this gladiola looks a little sad. I plan to repaint the background.
“Morning Canopy” 2008
Oil on Panel 24inX24in
This is a theme I hope to revisit this summer. A garden from a bugs eye view.
“Nightwind Tallgrass” 2008
Oil on Panel 24inX24in
This has been one of my most popular paintings. It was a challenge to get the effect of motion and blur. More of this theme to come soon.
“Orchid Chaos” 2007
Oil on Panel 24inX24in
Another possible repaint. The composition of the blossoms is a little weak. And there's a lot of potential in those shiny, glaucous leaves.
“Pop Art” 2008
Oil on Panel 24inX24in
A day after I finished this painting of poppies, it occurred to me it looked a lot like an Andy Warhol painting of poppies. Ergo the name.
“Saturn” 2007
Oil on Panel 24inX24in
This peony blossomed in a very strange shape. As a candidate for a vase, it was dubious. But as a subject for a painting it was quite marvelous.
“Focus” 2007
Oil on Panel 24inX24in
This is the most popular among my fellow artists. Of this black and white flower series, it was by far the most time consuming. I plan to use this painting as sketch for a colour version. Satiny magenta petals and evergreen-coloured foliage.
“This Ain't No Disco” 2007
Oil on Panel 24inX24in
Maybe a bit ubiquitous stuff in a glass of water. Nonetheless, a challenging subject.
“Twist in High Key” 2008
Oil on Panel 24inX24in
I hope to do a very large colour variation of this painting. Creamy white petals with tiny dots of scarlet at the edges of the petals and cadmium yellow anthers and pistils in the middle.
It will be very large (for me anyway), at least 6 feet wide.
